Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1

Is the Trucking Startup Roadmap really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, completely free. Enter your name and email and we'll send it directly to your inbox. No credit card, no hidden fees, no catch.

Question 2

Who is Haulgate Academy for?

Accepted Answer

Anyone who wants to start a trucking or transportation business — whether you have a CDL or not, industry experience or not. If you're serious about building a real operation, this is for you.

Question 3

Do I need prior trucking experience to start?

Accepted Answer

No. Many successful owner-operators started with zero industry experience. What matters more is your willingness to learn the business side: authority, insurance, freight, and finances. The roadmap covers all of it.

Question 4

How long does it take to start a trucking business?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the model and how prepared you are. Some operators are running within 30–60 days. Others take 3–6 months. The roadmap helps you understand what's involved so you can plan realistically — not based on hype.

Question 5

How much money do I need to get started?

Accepted Answer

It varies significantly by business model. Hot shot trucking can be started for as little as $10,000–$20,000 if you already have a capable truck. Long-haul operations with a semi typically require $30,000–$80,000+ depending on whether you buy or lease. The roadmap breaks down startup costs by model.

Question 6

Do I need a CDL to start a trucking business?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the business model. Hot shot trucking with a pickup and flatbed (under 26,001 lbs GVWR) typically doesn't require a CDL. Long-haul and heavy freight operations with a semi do. The roadmap covers CDL requirements by model in detail.

Question 7

How do I get my MC and DOT numbers?

Accepted Answer

You apply through the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) at fmcsa.dot.gov. The process involves registering your business, completing the OP-1 application, and paying the filing fee. After approval, there's a mandatory 10-business-day protest period before your authority activates. The roadmap walks you through every step.

Question 8

What's the difference between a DOT number and an MC number?

Accepted Answer

A USDOT number identifies your company for safety and compliance purposes. An MC (Motor Carrier) number grants you operating authority to haul freight for hire across state lines. Most for-hire carriers need both. Intrastate carriers may only need a DOT number depending on their state.

Question 9

Do I need to register my business before applying for authority?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You'll need a legal business entity (LLC or corporation) and an EIN (Employer Identification Number) from the IRS before you can apply for operating authority. The roadmap covers business formation as the first step.

Question 10

What is a BOC-3 filing and do I need one?

Accepted Answer

A BOC-3 (Designation of Process Agents) is a required filing that designates a legal agent in every state to receive legal documents on your behalf. It's required before your MC authority activates. Process agent services typically cost $20–$40 as a one-time fee.

Question 11

What insurance do I need to operate?

Accepted Answer

At minimum: Primary Liability (required by FMCSA — $750,000 for general freight, $1M for hazmat), Cargo Insurance (protects the freight you're hauling), and Physical Damage (covers your truck). Many brokers also require General Liability. Expect to pay $8,000–$18,000+ per year depending on your operation.

Question 12

Why is trucking insurance so expensive?

Accepted Answer

New authorities are considered high-risk by insurers because there's no safety history on file. Rates typically drop significantly after 1–2 years of clean operation. Shopping multiple carriers and working with a trucking-specific insurance broker can help you find competitive rates from day one.

Question 13

What is an IFTA license and do I need one?

Accepted Answer

IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) is a fuel tax reporting agreement between US states and Canadian provinces. If you operate a qualified motor vehicle (over 26,000 lbs or 3+ axles) across state lines, you're required to register for IFTA in your base state and file quarterly fuel tax reports.

Question 14

What is a UCR and do I need to file it?

Accepted Answer

UCR (Unified Carrier Registration) is an annual federal registration requirement for interstate motor carriers. Most for-hire carriers are required to register and pay the annual fee, which is based on fleet size. It's one of several annual compliance filings the roadmap covers.

Question 15

How do I find loads when I'm just starting out?

Accepted Answer

Load boards are the most common starting point — DAT and Truckstop.com are the two largest. As a new authority, you'll likely start on the spot market until you build relationships with brokers and shippers. The roadmap covers load boards, broker relationships, and how to move toward direct shipper contracts over time.

Question 16

What's the difference between a broker and a direct shipper?

Accepted Answer

A freight broker acts as a middleman between you and the shipper, taking a percentage of the load rate. A direct shipper contracts with you directly, cutting out the broker margin. Direct shipper relationships typically pay better but take time to develop. Most new carriers start with brokers and build toward direct freight.

Question 17

How do I know if a load rate is good?

Accepted Answer

A common benchmark is the cost-per-mile calculation: add up all your operating costs (fuel, insurance, truck payment, maintenance, etc.) and divide by miles driven. Any rate above that number is profitable. DAT and Truckstop publish rate-per-mile averages by lane that you can use as a reference.

Question 18

How long does it take to get paid after delivering a load?

Accepted Answer

Standard broker payment terms are net 30 days after delivery and invoice submission. Many brokers offer quick pay options (same day to 3 days) for a fee of 2–5%. Factoring companies will also advance payment on invoices for a similar fee, which helps with cash flow when you're starting out.

Question 19

What's the difference between an owner-operator and a carrier?

Accepted Answer

An owner-operator typically leases their authority to a larger carrier and operates under that carrier's MC number. A carrier holds their own operating authority and is responsible for all compliance, insurance, and freight procurement. Running your own authority gives you more control and higher earning potential but comes with more responsibility.

Question 20

What is hot shot trucking?

Accepted Answer

Hot shot trucking uses a heavy-duty pickup truck (typically a 1-ton dually) and a flatbed or gooseneck trailer to haul time-sensitive, smaller loads. It's one of the lower-barrier entry points into trucking — often no CDL required, lower startup costs, and faster to get running. It's covered in detail in the roadmap.

Question 21

Can I start with just one truck?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Most successful trucking businesses started with a single truck. The goal in year one is to learn the business, build relationships, and generate consistent revenue. Scaling to multiple trucks comes after you've proven the model works for you.

Question 22

Should I buy or lease my first truck?

Accepted Answer

Both have tradeoffs. Buying gives you equity and lower monthly costs long-term but requires more upfront capital. Leasing (or lease-to-own) has lower entry costs but higher total cost over time and less flexibility. The right answer depends on your capital, credit, and risk tolerance — the roadmap helps you think through both options.
